The yellowed fragment of paper drifted to land at the warrior's feet. What could it be, this stange message? Carefully, he smoothed the magic talisman and took it home.
The firelight flickered, making the strange symbols dance like horse's feet in the trace marks. And yes, the horseshoes with the dots inside meant that he would raid for many fine spotted ponies. He would have to copy this wonderful magic onto his shield so that everyone would know of his good fortune.
C.J. Wells, a noted Native American painter, has exhibited at the Heard Museum, has been featured in Arizona Highways magazine and has several paintings hanging on the sets of the popular L.A. Law television series.
Ms. Wells created The Legend of the Dancing Horses specifically for the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra. The white feathers of his headdress are reminiscent of Beethoven's wildly disordered hair.
